Our vision addresses the challenge of meaningfully utilizing the Nad Barborou site, situated on the periphery of the historic Old Karviná, with a particular focus on its historical and landscape significance. Through a detailed analysis of the site’s historical layers, our approach introduces a new dimension that harmoniously integrates with the designated function, thereby enriching both the urban and landscape design.
Central to our vision is the commitment to align with the EDEN PROJECT’s ethos of harmonizing with nature, especially in the context of the global environmental crisis. This principle is fundamental in our development of the Nad Barborou site, where we intertwine EDEN PROJECT’s values with our architectural design. Our goal is to create a space that is in sync with nature, focusing on the conservation and rejuvenation of wild areas, enabling their natural resurgence. We aim to restore and revitalize impacted regions, transforming them into beacons of hope and environmental rejuvenation.
The EDEN PROJECT’s mission centers around growing a global movement that collaborates with nature to confront the planetary emergency. This mission resonates deeply with our project, as we strive to transform the Nad Barborou site into a symbol of positive change. Through our design, we aim to reflect the EDEN PROJECT’s ethos of respect for nature, demonstrating that humanity is a part of, not apart from, the natural world. Our project embodies the EDEN PROJECT’s core principles: respecting the natural world, protecting wild places, and repairing damaged spaces, thus contributing to a healthier planet and community.
Our concept draws inspiration from both local and global traditions. The Miners’ Day, celebrated under the patronage of St. Barbara on December 4, embodies local customs of acknowledging life’s hardships, expressing gratitude for health, and commemorating the less fortunate. The theme of transformation and renewal is symbolically represented by the image of Barbara and the cherry blossom branches, cut on this day and blossoming by Christmas, signifying hope emerging from desolation. This symbol, arising from the remnants of a desolate landscape as a beacon of hope, is physically represented in the EDEN building. From this structure, flourishing gardens radiate outwards, injecting new life into the surroundings and integrating with the remnants of the old city. This transformation marks the inception of regional rejuvenation.
The complex extends beyond the central tropical biosphere. It will house scientific teams from the newly established faculty of Silesian University, conducting vital research on the effects of environmental changes on tropical ecosystems, further enhancing the project’s scientific and ecological significance.
